About Ashten:

Ashten Falter is an Austin-based film and theater artist and educator with a BFA in Musical Theater from Rider University and a Digital Video Certificate from the Austin School of Film. She is a member of Women in Film and Television of Austin and part of the Producer Program at Austin Public.

Ashten has contributed to multiple short films and music videos as a producer, director, and performer. Some of her credits include co-producing the short film Pitchers, directing and producing the music video Moon Over My Shoulder (featuring singer-songwriter James Hearne), and creating the impressionist video Not Yet, set to Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

With over 15 years of experience in arts education, she has taught and directed with organizations such as Austin School of Film, Christian Youth Theater, and Brentwood Christian School. Ashten is passionate about empowering young artists and fostering collaborative, community-centered storytelling.

Bring a song, monologue, or audition cut—whatever piece you’re currently working on or excited to explore. This format gives you the autonomy to present what speaks to you, while allowing Ryan to support each artist at their unique experience level.

🌀 Grounding Group Warm-Ups
We’ll kick things off with engaging, play-based acting games. These fun and energizing exercises are designed to train presence, focus, and spontaneity—skills essential to any great performer.

👀 Observation = Learning
Not ready to perform? No problem! Space permitting, students are welcome to join as observers. Watching fellow performers receive coaching offers valuable insights, inspiration, and practical takeaways you can apply to your own work.

Meet Ryan

Ryan Rhue brings a wealth of stage experience and elite training to the classroom. He earned his B.A. in Theater Performance from Wagner College and his M.F.A. in Acting from the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, which included a residency at the Moscow Art Theatre. He is also trained in classical and contemporary vocal performance and musical/comedy improv through the Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC.

As a performer, Ryan has taken on everything from Sondheim to Shakespeare, Britney Spears parodies to Chekhov. Regional credits include Sweeney Todd, Spamalot, Macbeth, Evita, Rent, West Side Story, The Seagull, Familiar, Burn This, The White Card, and more. His cover band, The Uncommon, recently won the 2024 HAAM Battle of the Bands on the ACL Live stage.

Ryan’s coaching focuses on playfulness, precision, and authenticity. He empowers students to bring out their full range as performers by honoring their individual voice, instincts, and humanity. He’s taught students from middle school through professional level in acting, script analysis, improv, and singing.

Audition Notice: Children’s Book Concert Series

Birchwood Performing Arts is seeking dynamic, engaging performers for our children’s book concert series in partnership with Birdhouse Books in North Austin —a fusion of storytelling and live music that brings beloved children’s books to life!

Audition Details:

Audition Format: Virtual (Video Submission)

Submission Deadline: February 28th

Where to Submit: Google Form

Who We’re Looking For:

• Versatile singers comfortable learning music and blocking very quickly - we typically only have four rehearsals and a dress rehearsal to put the show together - including learning 4 - 6 songs with blocking/choreography for each.

• Performers comfortable engaging with young audiences

• All ages, genders, and backgrounds are encouraged to submit

Submission Requirements:

• A video of you singing a 16 - 32 bar cut of a song showcasing your vocal abilities

• Headshot and resume (if you have)

About the Series:

Our Book Reading concerts are a 30 minute experience of a popular children’s book reading with songs from the related musical interspersed throughout, typically performed in the morning/early afternoon on a weekend.  We launched this series with How The Grinch Stole Christmas! and sold out both shows - so we are excited to expand this to other beloved children’s stories.   We try to keep our concerts small and cast between 2 - 5 people for each show, with certain people being double cast.

Our next few readings are: Pinkalicious on April 5th, Junie B. Jones on June 14th and 22nd, and Shrek on August 16th and August 22nd.  Rehearsals will begin on Pinkalicious start on March 12th - please see the form for all other rehearsal dates for Pinkalicious and dates for the other concerts.
